Sioux Falls has 701 homeless schoolchildren in grades K-12. They can be
transients, living in vans, motels, shelters or
double-parked in another family's apartment. And at night they're cold.
Volunteers tried to ease the chill with an all-day stitching session. About 160
volunteers came Saturday to the
Instructional Planning Center and made 314 blankets from donated fleece. On
Monday, two students from the University
of Sioux Falls walked in with 40 more.
"It's 356 now, but the ticker keeps going up. I just think people really want to
help," said Tracy Vik, school district staff
development coordinator.
