Project Warm-Up turns 20!
In our community, the need for warmth and care is very real—each year more than 900 children in the Sioux Falls School District are classified as homeless, meaning they may be living in shelters, motels, doubled up with other families, in cars, or in even more uncertain situations. Project Warm-Up was created to respond to this need with compassion and action. What began in 2006 with just 20 Lincoln High School students who wanted to make a difference has grown into a powerful, community-wide effort.
Through the generosity of volunteers and supporters, Project Warm-Up has distributed more than 43,000 new fleece blankets to children and families across the Sioux Empire and beyond. These blankets provide more than physical warmth—they offer comfort, dignity, and a reminder that someone cares. They have reached individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, illness, loss, foster care transitions, and recovery from natural disasters.
Every Sioux Falls School District school has benefited, along with community partners such as Child’s Voice, Ronald McDonald House, Teddy Bear Den, Habitat for Humanity, St. Francis House, and many others. Together, Project Warm-Up volunteers help wrap our community in warmth, hope, and kindness—one blanket at a time.
Project Warm-Up exists solely upon the generosity of others. People donate funds, fleece, and/or time. We have gotten pretty savvy in our fleece shopping and can make a child-sized blanket for $15. A donation of $100 would enable us to wrap six children in the warmth and comfort of a new blanket. Imagine what a larger donation could do! Our goal is to make at least 3,000 blankets this year! The need is great, but we are ready to meet the challenge! Your donation is tax-deductible.
